Back in January TVWeek.com spoke with American Idol Executive Producer, Mike Darnell. At that time he announced that when we get to the top 12 there will be a twist. Could that twist be happening tonight? Or next week? Could the producers be thinking of having a top 13 or 14 with a couple of double eliminations? Or will it be as simple as getting to see the idols offstage (living in a house like the Real World... can anyone say Judge's Mansion)?
Here's a transcript of the interview:
TVWeek: Can we expect surprises as the season goes along?
Mr. Darnell: Yeah. There’s a big surprise coming when we get to the top 12, but I can’t reveal it right now.
TVWeek: Will it change the way we think of “American Idol?”
Mr. Darnell: Well, it’s not going to change what you think of “American Idol” and we don’t want to do that. This show is, you know, a phenomenon. It’s American, it’s apple pie. We’re not changing the core of the show, but it is something that will be talked about and is something I think that has some element of controversy surrounding it.
TVWeek: Do the contestants know?
Mr. Darnell: No. No one knows.
TVWeek: Is that part of it? You want to keep the contestants guessing?
Mr. Darnell: Part of it. But I also think it’s more that it’s a long season and you want to keep as many surprises for the audience, for the press, for everybody, as you go along. Some controversies will pop out. But this is something that we sort of felt like, here’s one set of things we’re doing, we’re going to wait and give you the other set when we get to the final 12.

Is there a twist coming tonight?

I hope they don't do a 'Real World' type house because then the producers will be trying to cast people who will make for a interesting living situation (aka Tatiana) and not on who has the best voice... KEEP THIS A SINGING COMPETITION PLEASE!
ReplyDeleteI believe the show will lose ALL integrity. I will not ever watch it again and I don't think some of the Top 12 contestants will be happy over it. And yeah it would bring back Tatiana just for drama, leaving someone who can sing out of the competition, that is sad. These people must be crazy I don't even watch Big Brother House or whatever that show is, please spare me the drama. This is a singing competition, not a distasteful reality show. Please Please don't go there.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody remember when the contestants used to live together in a house? I don't remember what season it was, but I remember them showing the house and some of the "drama" that went on inside of it. It wasn't a big hit and I think that is why they never did it again....I hope they don't try to bring that back. It would make a joke out of the show.
ReplyDeleteThe contestants lived in a house together for season 2 I know, and maybe for seasons 1 & 3. I remember them showing different things that happened (birthdays, etc.). As long as they don't just go for the drama, it could be cool. It's always nice to see how the contestants spend what little free time they have.
ReplyDelete"Ewww... Danny didn't wash his dishes.. I'm not voting for him." ...or something like that right?
ReplyDeleteThere's a rumor going around that each week America will vote in the two worst, who will then have a singoff, with the judges choosing who leaves.. like the format of X Factor and America's Best Dance Crew.
ReplyDeleteI think that is a rumor for sure. The two worse, I doubt it.
ReplyDeleteThere are soo many ideas in my head right now that I just can't wait to watch the show already!
