Ain't Goin' Down

So we hear that Michael may be singing Garth Brooks' "Ain't Goin' Down Till the Sun Comes Up" tonight. We sorta hope that's wrong, as it's one of those songs that doesn't really show off the singer's voice and are pretty sure Simon'll say it's a bad song choice. Here's Josh Gracin singing the song in the second season of American Idol:

Jorge wanted Michael's song

In an appearance on Regis and Kelly this morning, Jorge said his last song "Never Can Say Goodbye" was not first song choice. He wanted to sing “You Are Not Alone” but Michael got it first. “Never Can Say Goodbye” was the only ballad left, and he sang it, even though he’d never heard it before.

Here's the video of Jorge and Jasmine's interview

Tuesday night a THRILLER

American Idol fans are abuzz with what Michael Jackson songs each of the Top 13 should sing Tuesday night. Here are a couple suggested for Michael in the fan forums: The Way You Make Me Feel, Black or White, Say, Say, Say and Modern Man. As long as someone does the moon walk and no one grabs their crotch, we'll be happy with whatever Michael chooses. But we thought we'd give his fans a chance to chime in with their suggestions. Anyone?

Is it Michael Jackson week!

Fan forums are reporting that the theme of next week's show is Michael Jackson songs! If true, this bodes well for Sarver who's favorite artist just happens to be Mr. Jackson! The Top 13 received a list of songs today that they can choose from. Any chance Michael Jackson will be this week's celebrity mentor too? Seems unlikely to us, as it seems a little too public. But it would give Mr. Jackson the opportunity to push his new tour announced just days ago.

UPDATE: Ryan Seacrest confirmed this afternoon that it is indeed Michael Jackson week.

The themes of the two upcoming weeks, in an unknown order are Grand Ole Opry and Motown, both themes Michael should excel in.

Are we judging song choices or singing?

From MSNBC
It came up over and over again last week on American Idol. Instead of critiquing the singers' voices, Simon Cowell and his fellow judges fell back and blamed the song choice. "I really like you, but I absolutely hated that song," Simon told welder Matt Breitzke Wednesday night. "Completely the inappropriate song for you, but you do have great legs," he said to Jeanine Vailes, sounding more than a little like a creepy old man.

I think criticizing song choice can be fair if the singer has gone way out on a limb and picked something that they just can't handle. You need to know your own limitations -- it's hard to argue with that -- and many of these singers don't. But even then, it should be only part of the critique. Too often, it seems like the judges get lazy and blame the song instead of really dissecting the performance of the song, even if they didn't like the choice.
A friend of mine thinks that 99 percent of the time when the judges harp on "bad song choice" they really mean "bad genre choice."

They've already pigeonholed the singers into different boxes -- oil rig roughneck Michael Sarver looks like a country guy, even though he hasn't sung country on the show. Don't get out of your pre-assigned box, people! If Simon decides R&B is your genre, don't try a pop song (Jasmine Murray was dinged for this Wednesday night).
